Help!?

I don't have poster board or sticky notes—what can I use instead?

Use a flattened large cereal or shipping box or tape several sheets of printer paper together for the poster board, and replace sticky notes by folding small scraps of paper as page markers or using paperclips to mark the three to five pages.

I'm worried my poster sections will look messy or I won't have enough space—how can I avoid that?

Before writing on the poster board, draft the layout on your scrap paper using the pencil and ruler from step 5 and copy only the final book title, one-sentence summary, and three short bullet reasons so everything fits neatly.

How can I change this activity for younger or older kids?

For younger children have an adult scribe the one-sentence story summary and the three reasons while the child points to and decorates the three to five favorite pages, and for older kids ask them to include direct quotes from the marked pages or make a short video of their presentation to upload to DIY.org.

How can we make this poster more personal or go beyond the basic project?

Personalize the poster by gluing a pocket on the poster board to hold the marked pages, drawing characters or patterns that show the book's mood during the decoration step, writing a favorite quote in fancy letters, and recording a practiced presentation to share on DIY.org.

How do I help my child create and present a short book review poster?

To do this activity, have your child choose a favorite book and read it closely. Guide them to write a one- to three-sentence summary, list main characters, and explain why they like the story. On a poster include title, author, a favorite line or drawing, and a simple star rating. Let them decorate, then practice a 1–2 minute oral presentation with index cards. Present to family or classmates and invite a few questions afterward.

What materials do I need to make a book review poster?

You’ll need a poster board or large paper, markers or colored pencils, glue, scissors, and printed or hand-drawn images from the book. Optional items: stickers, index cards for notes, a ruler for neat lines, photos of the cover, and a printer for typed text. For virtual presentations, a tablet or phone to display the poster and a simple slide app can be helpful. Keep materials non-toxic and age-appropriate.

What ages is this book review poster activity suitable for?

This activity works for kids about 4–12+. Preschoolers (4–5) can draw the cover and say one sentence about the book with adult help. Early readers (6–8) can write short summaries and present briefly. Older children (9–12) can write a longer summary, include reasons and themes, and give a fuller oral review. Adjust complexity, writing expectations, and adult support to match each child’s reading and speaking skills.

What are the benefits of making and presenting a book review poster?

Creating and presenting a book review poster builds reading comprehension, vocabulary, and summarizing skills. It strengthens written expression, encourages creativity through design, and boosts public speaking confidence. Kids learn to organize ideas, give reasons for opinions, and listen respectfully to peers. This activity also fosters a deeper connection to stories and can spark classroom discussions or book exchanges, helping social skills and a lifelong love of reading.
