Making homemade slime is one of those brilliantly simple activities that never seems to go out of style. It's messy, sensory, creative — and best of all, really easy to do with ingredients you probably already have in the cupboard. Whether it's a rainy afternoon or you just need something to keep the kids busy, slime is a great go-to. Once you've got the basic recipe down, you can really start to play around. Think pastel pinks, neon greens, glittery purples - or go big with themed slimes like alien goo, sparkly mermaid gloop from a deep-sea lagoon, or a marbled unicorn mix that looks straight out of a storybook.
It's also a fun and low-cost activity for birthday parties. Kids can make their own slime at the table, and you can even pre-make pots for party bags or put together mini DIY kits as take-home gifts. Slime is a brilliant sensory toy that encourages creativity and hands-on play. It's safe for little hands to help with — just keep in mind that it's not edible, so younger kids should be supervised while making and playing.
Instructions
🧴 White PVA Glue (½ cup), 💧 Water (1 cup, divided),🧂 Borax Powder (1 tsp), 🌈 Food Coloring (optional, a few drops), 🥣 Mixing Bowl, 🥄 Spoon or Stir Stick.
Pour ½ cup of white glue into a mixing bowl. Add ½ cup of water and stir until fully blended. This is your slime base.
If you want colored slime, add a few drops of food coloring to the glue mixture. Stir until the color is even.
In a separate cup, dissolve ½ tsp of borax powder into 1 cup of warm water. Stir well until the borax is fully dissolved.
Slowly add the borax solution to the glue mixture, a little at a time, stirring constantly. You'll see the slime start to form immediately!
Once it starts clumping, use your hands to knead the slime for a minute or two. It will get less sticky as you knead.
Place the slime in an airtight container to keep it fresh. It can last a week or more if stored properly!
My slime is breaking apart Use less contact lens solution. Add it slowly, until it starts to pull away from the the bowl. Knead well. I'd like fluffier slime Add a small puff of shaving foam. It makes the texture lighter and more airy. I'd like to make more You can easily double or triple the ingredients to make a bigger batch. My slime is still too sticky after kneading Mix in a tiny bit more contact lens solution and keep kneading. My slime isn't coming together at all Check your contact lens solution — make sure it contains boric acid, not just saline. I want to make marbled or unicorn slime Split your mix into a few colours, add glitter, roll into ropes, and twist them together.
