What you need
Paper, pencil, eraser, black marker, colouring materials

Step 1

Draw a large fluffy cloud shape for the sheep's body using a light pencil.

Step 2

Draw a smaller circle touching the front top of the body for the sheep's head.

Step 3

Draw two rounded ear shapes on top of the head.

Step 4

Draw four short straight lines under the body for the legs.

Step 5

Draw a small oval at the end of each leg for the hooves.

Step 6

Draw two round eyes on the head.

Step 7

Draw a small oval nose and a curved line for a smiling mouth under the eyes.

Step 8

Draw scalloped bumps all around the body outline to make the wool look fluffy.

Step 9

Trace over the final outer lines with a black marker or darker pencil to make them bold.

Step 10

Erase any extra pencil guidelines gently so your drawing looks clean.

Step 11

Help!?

What can we use if we don't have a black marker or colouring materials?

Use a dark crayon, felt-tip pen, or thin permanent marker to trace the final outer lines in step 9, and substitute watercolours, crayons, or torn coloured paper for the colouring in step 12.

My scalloped bumps look messy—how do I fix them?

If the scalloped bumps from step 8 look messy, redraw them lightly with a pencil in small sections, then trace the clean outer line in step 9 and gently erase extra guidelines in step 10.

How can I adapt this sheep drawing for different ages?

For preschoolers, simplify by drawing one big cloud body and sticking cotton balls for the wool instead of doing scallops in step 8, while older kids can add cross-hatching shadows in step 11 and tiny fleece lines inside the scalloped outline.

How can we enhance or personalize the finished sheep?

Personalize the sheep by adding a pasture background and coloured patterns with your colouring materials from step 12, glue on cotton or fabric for real wool texture, and then share the finished sheep on DIY.org as in step 13.

Fun Facts

🐑 Sheep were among the first animals humans domesticated — around 10,000 years ago.

🧶 A single sheep can grow enough wool in a year to make at least one sweater (amount varies by breed).

✂️ Most sheep are shorn once a year to keep them healthy and to collect their wool.

🎨 Many cartoon and character drawings begin with simple shapes like circles and ovals before adding details.

🔎 Sheep have rectangular pupils that give them a wide field of vision — great for spotting predators!

How do I draw a fluffy sheep step by step?

Start with simple shapes: sketch a large cloud-like oval for the body, a smaller oval for the head, and four short ovals for legs. Add scalloped, cloud-shaped edges around the body to suggest wool and erase inner guide lines. Draw ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and hooves. Use short curved strokes across the body for texture, then shade lightly under the belly and behind legs to create depth and finish with small details like tufts and grass.

What materials do I need to draw a fluffy sheep?

You’ll need drawing paper or a sketchbook, an HB pencil for outlines and a softer 2B or 4B pencil for shading, a soft eraser, pencil sharpener, and a blending stump or tissue for smooth shading. Optional items: colored pencils, crayons or markers, fine liners for crisp outlines, and a reference photo of a sheep. A kneaded eraser helps lift highlights. Choose non-toxic, age-appropriate supplies for kids.

What ages is drawing a fluffy sheep suitable for?

This activity fits many ages with tweaks: ages 3–5 can trace basic shapes and add scalloped wool with adult help; ages 6–9 can follow step-by-step shapes, practice texture strokes and simple shading; ages 10+ can refine proportions, experiment with pencil grades and blending, and add backgrounds. Supervise very young children when using sharpeners or small tools, and use thicker paper for enthusiastic scribblers.

What are the benefits of drawing a fluffy sheep?

Drawing a fluffy sheep improves fine motor control, hand–eye coordination, and pencil technique through repeated shapes and texture strokes. It develops observational skills and introduces light-and-shadow basics when practicing shading. The step-by-step method builds confidence and patience, while choosing colors or expressions encourages creativity. Group drawing supports social skills, and completing a drawing gives children a sense of achievement and emotional satisfaction.
