Help!?

What can we use if we don't have blank index cards or the Fun Fact cards?

If you don't have blank index cards or Fun Fact cards, cut printer paper or cereal-box cardboard into card-sized pieces and use them the same way in Steps 2–11.

What should we do if we can't find a simple trusted source to check a fact?

If a kids' book or encyclopedia isn't available for Step 4, use a trusted kid-friendly website (for example National Geographic Kids), ask a librarian or adult for help, and confirm the fact with at least one clear source before deciding in Step 6.

How can I adapt the activity for younger or older children?

For younger kids, have an adult read the Fun Fact card aloud (Step 3), help look up the topic and write the corrected fact (Steps 4–8), and let them draw and sticker-rate the card (Steps 9–11), while older kids should consult multiple sources, write a proper source note on the new card (Step 10), and add a short bibliography when stacking the collection.

How can we extend or personalize the corrected card collection once it's finished?

After stacking and adding a title card in the final step, bind the corrected cards into a booklet, add QR codes linking to each card's source from Step 10, or turn the cards into a quiz game to share on DIY.org.

Facts about fact-checking and media literacy for kids

🔍 Fact-checking desks became common in journalism in the 20th century to catch mistakes before printing.

🎨 People remember information better when it’s paired with pictures—perfect for illustrated fact cards!

📚 Reliable sources include books, academic articles, and reputable news sites—not every webpage is accurate.

🧾 The five W's (who, what, when, where, why) are a quick checklist kids can use to check a fact.

🕵️‍♀️ Double-checking facts can lead to fun discoveries or surprising corrections, even for grown-up experts.

How do we do the Review Fun Fact Factory activity?

Start by laying out the Fun Fact cards and read each one together. For each fact, use child-friendly sources (library books, trusted kid websites, or an adult) to check accuracy. Mark each card as True, Partly True, or False and write a short note explaining why. Create a corrected fact card with a clear sentence and a small illustration. Swap cards and discuss findings. Finish by organizing the corrected cards into a little booklet or box.

What materials do I need for the Fun Fact Factory activity?

Gather the fun fact cards, paper or blank index cards for corrected versions, pencils and erasers, colored markers or crayons for illustrations, scissors and glue or tape, stickers for ratings, and a folder or small box to store the finished collection. Have child-friendly reference sources ready—library books, a kid-safe website list, or a parent’s device for supervised searches. Optional: magnifying glass, clipboard, and a simple rating chart.

What ages is the Review Fun Fact Factory activity suitable for?

This activity fits children about 6–12 years old. Younger kids (6–8) do well with parent or teacher support for reading and looking up facts, focusing on simple true/false checks and drawing corrections. Older kids (9–12) can research independently, write short explanations, and create more detailed illustrations. Adapt complexity and time allowed to your child’s reading level and attention span for the best experience.

What are the benefits of doing the Fun Fact Factory activity with children?

Reviewing and correcting fun facts builds critical thinking, basic research skills, and media literacy by teaching kids to verify information. It strengthens reading comprehension, written expression, and fine motor skills through drawing and card-making. The activity encourages curiosity, confidence in asking questions, and cooperative learning when done in pairs or groups. It also creates a personalized learning artifact kids can revisit to reinforce what they learned.
