Easy trifle recipe, perfect Christmas dessert!

What you need
Clear cups, sponge cake or store cake, mixed fruit (berries or chopped fruit), custard powder or ready-made custard, milk (if using powder), whipped cream can or heavy cream, mixing bowl, spoons and measuring spoons, cutting board and small knife, piping bag or zip-top bag (optional), adult supervision required

Step 1

Wash your hands with soap and dry them so everything stays clean.

Step 2

Put all your materials on the table within reach so you can work easily.

Step 3

With an adult, rinse the fruit under cold water to clean it.

Step 4

With an adult, cut larger fruit into small bite-sized pieces on the cutting board.

Step 5

Cut the sponge cake into bite-sized cubes using the small knife or your fingers.

Step 6

With an adult, mix and cook the custard following the packet directions or heat ready-made custard until warm and thick.

Step 7

Let the custard cool to warm or room temperature so it won’t melt the cream.

Step 9

Put about 2 tablespoons of cake cubes into the bottom of each clear cup.

Step 10

Spoon about 2 tablespoons of custard over the cake in each cup.

Step 11

Add about 2 tablespoons of fruit on top of the custard in each cup.

Step 12

Repeat the cake then custard then fruit layers one more time in each cup if there is room.

Step 13

Top each cup with whipped cream and place a piece of fruit or a sprinkle on top for decoration.

Help!?

If I can't find sponge cake, what can I use instead for the 'cut the sponge cake into bite-sized cubes' step?

Use cubed pound cake, store-bought angel food cake, ladyfingers, or even sturdy cookies like shortbread as a substitute for the sponge cake when making the cake cubes.

My custard is too runny and the layers slide—how can I fix it before assembling the cups?

Return the custard to low heat and stir until it thickens per the packet directions or refrigerate it until warm/room temperature so it won't melt the whipped cream or make the cake soggy.

How can I adapt the activity for younger children versus older kids while following the same steps?

For ages 3–5 let them place pre-cut cake cubes, spoon pre-cooled custard, and add fruit with adult cutting and cooking help; for 6–9 let them help whisk cream or spray whipped cream and assemble layers; for 10+ supervise them to follow the custard cooking and full assembly steps independently.

What are simple ways to enhance or personalize our trifle-in-a-cup after completing the basic layers and topping step?

Try adding a thin layer of jam or crushed cookies between cake and custard, swap whipped cream for mascarpone, sprinkle chocolate shavings or colored sprinkles on top, or use different fruit combinations for unique decorations before chilling.

How To Make The Classic British Trifle. Perfect English Dessert

How To Make The Classic British Trifle. Perfect English Dessert

Facts about cooking and baking for kids

🍰 Trifle has been a popular English dessert since the 16th century and started as a simple custard-soaked treat.

🥚 Custard is usually thickened with eggs—just a few eggs can turn milk into a silky dessert base.

☁️ Whipped cream can roughly double in volume when whipped, giving trifles their light, fluffy top layer.

🍓 Sponge cake or ladyfingers are often used in trifles because they soak up juices and custard for extra flavor.

📏 Measuring cups and spoons are a yummy way for kids to practice fractions and pouring with real results!

How do I make a trifle-in-a-cup with my child?

Start by preparing or buying cake, custard (or pudding), whipped cream, and washed, chopped fruit. Set a safe workspace with clear cups, bowls, spoons, and measuring tools. Have an adult handle slicing cake and any hot custard. Let the child layer cake cubes, a spoonful of fruit, a measured scoop of custard, then whipped cream. Repeat layers, chill briefly, and let the child finish with sprinkles or a fruit garnish.

What materials and ingredients do we need to make a trifle-in-a-cup?

You’ll need clear plastic or glass cups, cake (homemade or store-bought), custard or pudding, whipped cream or stabilized cream, and fresh fruit like berries or banana slices. Also gather measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, spatulas or spoons, a cutting board and knife for an adult, napkins, and optional piping bags or decorations like sprinkles and chocolate shavings.

What ages is making a trifle-in-a-cup suitable for?

This activity suits toddlers to preteens with varying supervision: ages 3–5 can spoon and layer with close adult help; ages 6–9 can measure, pour, and assemble with guidance; ages 10+ can largely work independently but should still have adult support for knife use or hot custard. Always supervise young children to prevent choking on large fruit pieces and to handle sharp tools or hot ingredients.

What are some fun variations for trifle-in-a-cup?

Try yogurt and granola for a breakfast parfait, use chocolate cake with chocolate pudding for a double-choc trifle, or swap custard for lemon curd for a tart twist. Make gluten-free or dairy-free versions using suitable cake and pudding, or create mini party jars and add layers like crushed cookies, nuts, or liqueur for adults. Seasonal fruit swaps and creative toppings keep the activity fresh and customizable.
