What you need
Adult supervision required, aerobic step or sturdy low step, comfortable athletic shoes, space to move, towel, water bottle

Step 1

Put on your comfortable athletic shoes and clothes so you can move easily.

Step 2

Place the aerobic step on a flat non-slip surface in your space.

Step 3

Stand facing the step with your feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent.

Step 4

Warm up by marching in place for 3 minutes to get your heart ready.

Step 5

Practice the basic right-lead pattern slowly by stepping right foot up then left up then right down then left down while saying "1 2 3 4" out loud for eight repetitions.

Step 6

Practice the basic left-lead pattern slowly by stepping left foot up then right up then left down then right down while saying "1 2 3 4" out loud for eight repetitions.

Step 7

Practice keeping good posture by standing tall with your chest up and soft knees while you repeat the step pattern for eight counts.

Step 8

Add a simple arm swing by reaching your arms forward when you step up and sweeping them back when you step down while doing the pattern for eight counts.

Step 9

Make a short combo by doing two right-lead sequences followed by two left-lead sequences to create a 16-count combo and practice it twice.

Step 10

Increase your speed slightly and perform the 16-count combo for one minute while staying controlled.

Step 11

Practice coordination by counting out loud to the beat and matching each count to your steps for one minute.

Help!?

What can we use if we don't have an aerobic step?

If you don't have an aerobic step, use a sturdy bottom stair, a stable low bench, or a stack of yoga mats to reach a safe step height and test the non-slip surface before practicing the right-lead and left-lead patterns.

I'm losing my balance when I speed up—what should I do?

If you lose balance during the speed increase or the 16-count combo, slow the tempo back to the slow practice steps, lower your step height, keep soft knees and good posture, and optionally hold a nearby chair for support while repeating the basic patterns.

How can we adapt the routine for younger or older kids?

For younger children, use a lower step or bottom stair, cut repetitions to four counts per pattern and play a counting game with the '1 2 3 4' rhythm, while older kids can increase speed, repeat the 16-count combo longer, or add arm swings and light ankle weights.

How can we make the Reebok Step routine more fun or challenging?

To enhance the routine, add upbeat music matched to the '1 2 3 4' counts, create a personalized 16-count choreography that includes a knee lift or tap-back after a down step, and record or share the final routine on DIY.org.

Facts about step aerobics for kids

🧍 Good step form means a neutral spine, soft knees, and landing through the whole foot for better balance and joint safety.

🎵 Many step routines are taught in 8-counts and 32-count music phrases — that makes timing moves easier and helps memory.

🪜 Most fitness steps are adjustable (commonly about 4 to 8 inches / 10–20 cm), so you can make moves easier or more challenging as you improve.

👟 Reebok helped popularize step platforms and home fitness gear in the 1990s, making step classes a gym favorite.

🏃‍♀️ Step aerobics is a great cardio workout — a typical session can burn roughly 400–600 calories an hour depending on intensity and your size.

How do I teach my child the Reebok Step routine?

Start with a warm-up, then demonstrate basic step patterns (step-up, tap, V-step, knee lift). Teach counting and timing—count “1-2-3-4” per pattern—and keep the tempo slow at first. Emphasize posture: straight spine, soft knees, weight centered. Add gentle arm movements and short 1–2 minute combinations, increasing duration as coordination improves. Use child-friendly music, mirror practice, praise effort, and finish with a cool-down stretch.

What materials do I need for a kids' Reebok Step session?

You'll need a low, adjustable step platform (set to a child-safe height), sturdy non-slip surface, and comfortable trainers with good grip. Also have a water bottle, towel, and age-appropriate upbeat music player. Optional: a softer mat for cooldown, small cones to mark space, and a basic first-aid kit. Make sure the platform is secure and not too high—safety is more important than intensity.

What ages is the Reebok Step suitable for children?

Generally suitable for children aged about 5 and up, with adapted lower-impact movements for younger kids. Preschoolers (3–5) can do simplified, supervised step games on very low platforms, while school-age children (6–12) can learn basic routines and timing. Always tailor height, speed, and duration to the child's coordination and stamina, and supervise closely to prevent falls or overexertion.

Is the Reebok Step safe for kids and what safety tips should I follow?

Yes, it's safe when adapted and supervised. Important tips: choose a low step height, ensure proper shoes and a non-slip surface, warm up and cool down, and avoid high-impact jumps for younger kids. Watch for fatigue, pain, or dizziness and stop if any occur. Keep the area clear, use child-sized progressions, and consult a pediatrician if your child has health concerns.
