Help!?
What can we use if we don't have potting soil or a seed packet?
If you don't have potting soil use a mix of screened garden soil and compost and if you don't have a seed packet pick seeds from kitchen herbs or vegetables you already have and follow the planting depth listed for similar seeds.
My soil keeps compacting or water puddles—what should I do?
If soil compacts or puddles, gently loosen the top layer with a spoon or fork after filling the pot and water with a spray bottle in short bursts until the soil is evenly moist as the instructions say.
How can I change this challenge for a 4-year-old versus a 12-year-old?
For a 4-year-old simplify tasks to watering the pot, sticking pre-drawn key symbols on the 30-box chart with adult help, and checking boxes, while a 12-year-old can write daily eco actions, measure planting depth from the seed packet, and write weekly growth notes independently.
How can we make the challenge more engaging or personalized?
Decorate the pot and notebook label with the seed name and date, use colored stickers that match your Planting/Waste/Water/Energy key symbols, take weekly photos of the plant, and share progress on DIY.org as the final step recommends.
