Step-by-step guide to showcase your football gear

What you need
Your football gear, soft cloth, mild soap, small bowl of water, clean towel, poster board or box lid, paper, markers or colouring materials, tape or sticky labels, adult supervision required

Step 1

Gather all your football gear and the materials and bring them to a clear table or floor space.

Step 2

Wet the soft cloth in the small bowl of water and put a tiny bit of mild soap on the cloth.

Step 3

Wipe each gear item gently with the soapy cloth to remove mud and dirt.

Step 4

Rinse the cloth in the bowl and wipe each item again to remove soap.

Step 5

Lay the cleaned items on the clean towel and leave them to air dry completely.

Step 6

Put the poster board or box lid on the table to be your exhibit base.

Step 7

Arrange the cleaned gear on the exhibit base in a neat and friendly display.

Step 8

Write a name label and one-sentence explanation for how each item protects or helps you on separate pieces of paper.

Step 9

Attach each label next to its matching item using tape or sticky labels.

Step 10

Take photos of the whole exhibit and close-up photos of each labeled item from a few angles.

Step 11

Share your finished exhibit and photos on DIY.org.

Help!?

What can we use if we don't have a poster board or box lid for the exhibit base?

Use a clean bed sheet, large baking tray, flattened moving box, or even a clean table placemat as your exhibit base instead of the poster board or box lid specified in the instructions.

My gear still looks dirty after wiping—what should I do during the cleaning steps?

If mud or soap residue remains, follow step 4 and rinse the cloth in the bowl and wipe items again, or change to a fresh bowl of clean water and repeat wiping before laying items on the towel to air dry as instructed.

How can I change the activity for different ages?

For preschoolers, an adult can pre-wet the soft cloth and let them help arrange one or two cleaned items and attach pre-written labels, while older kids can do all washing steps, write their own one-sentence explanations, and take the photos to upload to DIY.org.

How can we make the exhibit more interesting or personalized?

Decorate the poster board with team colors and the player's name, add a short safety fact on each label next to its matching item, and record a short narrated video showing the labeled close-up photos to share on DIY.org.

Facts about football equipment and safety

🏈 The very first football helmets were made of leather and offered almost no face protection — helmets became mandatory much later.

🛡️ Modern football helmets combine a hard outer shell with energy-absorbing foam inside to help spread out impact forces.

👟 Cleat patterns change for grass vs. artificial turf — the right studs can help players stop and turn faster.

🧥 Shoulder pads grew popular in the early 1900s as the sport got more physical, helping guard against shoulder and chest injuries.

📸 You can make a mini exhibit look pro with a smartphone camera, good lighting, and a clean white background for crisp photos.

How do I create a mini exhibit of my child's football gear?

To create a mini exhibit, start by cleaning and drying each piece of gear. Pick a tidy surface or poster board as your display area and lay items out grouped by type (helmet, pads, cleats). Write short labels identifying the item and its purpose, then have your child explain aloud or on a caption how each piece protects them. Photograph each arrangement from several angles, print or upload the images, and arrange them into a poster or digital slideshow for sharing.

What materials do I need to showcase football gear at home?

You will need the gear itself plus cleaning supplies (mild soap, soft brush or cloth, warm water), labels (sticky notes or index cards) and a marker, tape or clips for mounting, a camera or smartphone for photographs, a poster board or table space, and optional items like a backdrop fabric, small stands, a laminator for labels, and a ruler for spacing. Always supervise cleaning and handling, and keep small parts out of reach of very young children.

What ages is a football gear showcase suitable for?

This activity suits different ages with adult support: children 4-6 will enjoy arranging and labeling with help, while 7-9 can take on most cleaning and labeling tasks with supervision. Ages 10-14 can lead the project - take photos, write captions explaining protection functions, and research materials. Teens can add measurements or comparisons. Adapt instructions, provide appropriate supervision, and avoid letting very young kids handle small or heavy equipment alone.

What are the benefits of making a mini exhibit of football gear?

Making a football gear exhibit teaches responsibility and equipment care, builds safety awareness by connecting each item to its protective role, and strengthens vocabulary and communication when children label and explain gear. It develops fine motor skills through cleaning and arranging, boosts confidence and pride, and encourages teamwork and storytelling. Older kids also practice observation and basic measurement, making this a cross-curricular project with physical-education and STEM learni
