Kylee Makes Tie-Dye Shirts! How to Make Five Different Designs with Two Minute Tie Dye for Kids

What you need
Plain light-colored t-shirt, fabric markers, fabric paints, paintbrushes or foam sponge, stencils, cardboard or thick paper, masking tape, pencil, paper plate or palette, water cup, old towel, adult supervision required

Step 1

Lay an old towel on a flat table and slide a piece of cardboard inside the t-shirt to make a flat painting surface and stop paint from leaking through.

Step 2

On a sheet of paper draw a simple sketch of your t-shirt idea showing where big shapes will go.

Step 3

Pick two to four main colors you want to use and write their names next to your sketch so you remember them.

Step 4

Place the stencils on the t-shirt where you want the shapes and secure them with small pieces of masking tape.

Step 5

Lightly trace the stencils and any extra sketch lines onto the fabric with a pencil or a washable fabric marker.

Step 6

Squeeze small amounts of fabric paint onto a paper plate and mix two paints together to create new colors (try equal parts red and blue to make purple or add a tiny bit of white to make a lighter shade).

Step 7

Use a brush or sponge to fill in the large traced areas with your mixed base colors, painting inside the pencil lines.

Step 8

Let the painted areas dry completely on a flat surface for the time the paint bottle recommends before touching them.

Step 9

Add small details and outline shapes using fabric markers or a fine brush for crisp edges and extra decoration.

Step 10

Ask an adult to help heat-set the design by placing a thin cloth over the decoration and ironing on the fabric setting for a few minutes following the paint label instructions.

Step 11

Turn the shirt inside out and wash it gently on a cold or gentle cycle then hang to dry to protect your design.

Step 12

Share a photo of your finished custom t-shirt and tell us one color-mixing trick you used by posting it on DIY.org

Help!?

What can we use if we don't have fabric paint, stencils, or cardboard?

If you don't have fabric paint, mix acrylic paint with a textile medium or use washable fabric markers, make stencils by cutting paper or freezer paper to tape in place, and substitute the cardboard with a plastic folder or a double layer of cardstock inside the t-shirt to stop bleed-through.

My paint edges look fuzzy or colors smeared—what should I fix?

If paint bleeds under stencils or smears, press the stencils firmly with extra small pieces of masking tape, paint thin layers and let each area dry flat for the time the paint bottle recommends before adding outlines or touching the shirt, then heat-set the design with an iron and a thin cloth to prevent further smudging.

How can I adapt this project for younger or older kids?

For toddlers or preschoolers, have an adult place the cardboard and tape stencils and let kids color pre-drawn shapes with washable fabric markers or sponge brushes, while older kids can do the full sketch, mix colors on a paper plate, use brushes for filling, and add fine-detail outlines before heat-setting.

How can we make the finished t-shirt more special or advanced?

To enhance the design, create a light tie-dye or spray-painted background first, use metallic or glitter fabric paint for highlights, add sequins or fabric glue embellishments after the painted areas dry, and then post a photo with your color-mixing trick on DIY.org.

Facts about fabric crafts for kids

👕 The modern T-shirt grew from 19th-century underwear and became popular as outerwear in the 1950s thanks to movie stars!

🎨 With just three primary colors you can mix most other hues — red + yellow = orange, blue + yellow = green, red + blue = purple.

🖌️ Stencils let you stamp the same cool shape again and again — that's why they're great for matching designs on both front and sleeve.

🔥 Many fabric paints become permanent after heat-setting with an iron or dryer, so your art can survive lots of wears.

🧼 Washing a custom tee inside-out on a gentle cycle and air-drying helps the design stay bright much longer.

How do you make a custom t-shirt design with fabric markers, stencils, and paint?

Start with a clean, dry cotton t-shirt and slide cardboard inside to prevent bleed-through. Plan your layout by sketching lightly with pencil or chalk. Tape stencils in place and use fabric markers for outlines and details. Apply fabric paint with brushes or sponges for fills and color mixing—work light layers and let each dry. Remove stencils, touch up details, then heat-set per product instructions (iron or dryer) before the first wash.

What materials do I need to make a custom t-shirt?

You’ll need a plain cotton or cotton-blend t-shirt, fabric markers, fabric paints, brushes or sponges, and stencils. Also gather masking tape, pencil or chalk for sketching, a cardboard insert to block paint, a palette or plate, water cup and paper towels, and a protective work surface. An iron or clothes dryer is useful for heat-setting; choose non-toxic, washable fabric supplies for kids.

What ages is this t-shirt decorating activity suitable for?

This activity suits ages about 4 and up with supervision. Ages 4–5 need hands-on adult help for stencils, painting, and safety. Ages 6–8 can handle markers and simple stencils with guidance. Ages 9+ can plan layouts, mix colors, and try more detailed techniques independently. Always supervise when using scissors, paints, or heat-setting tools, and choose age-appropriate materials and tasks.

What are the benefits and safety tips for decorating a child’s custom t-shirt?

Decorating t-shirts builds creativity, color-mixing skills, planning, and fine motor control, and gives kids a wearable keepsake. Safety tips: use non-toxic fabric paints and markers, protect the workspace and clothing, insert cardboard to prevent bleed-through, and supervise scissors and paint. Adults should handle heat-setting (iron/dryer). For washing, wait recommended time, turn the shirt inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and air-dry or tumble dry low.
