What you need

Recycled paper or cardboard, leaves, green paint, paintbrush or sponge, glue, scissors, newspaper or old cloth to protect workspace, adult supervision required

Step 1

Spread newspaper or an old cloth on your table to protect the surface.

Step 2

Put all materials within easy reach so you can grab them quickly.

Step 3

Choose one piece of recycled paper or cardboard to be the base of your collage.

Step 4

Paint the whole base with green paint to make a background.

Step 5

Pick and sort leaves and recycled scraps by size and shape to see what you can use.

Step 6

Arrange leaves and recycled scraps on the painted base until you like the layout.

Step 7

Glue each leaf and scrap onto the base one at a time, pressing each piece firmly.

Step 8

Paint extra green details or patterns on top of glued pieces to add depth.

Step 9

Let your collage dry completely until no paint or glue is tacky.

Step 10

Clean your paintbrush with water and dry it.

Step 11

Put recyclable scraps into a recycling bin.

I don't have green paint—what can I use instead?

Mix blue and yellow tempera or poster paints to make green, or skip painting by covering the base with green construction paper or coloring it with green crayons or markers before arranging leaves.

My leaves keep curling up or falling off—how can I fix that?
