NBCUniversal is a big company that makes movies, TV shows, and fun places to visit. It is part of another company called Comcast and has its main office at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Two very famous parts are the TV network NBC, which brings news and shows to many homes, and Universal Pictures, the movie studio that makes films for theaters and streaming. NBCUniversal also runs the streaming service Peacock, owns TV channels in different languages, and helps run theme parks where people can ride attractions and see characters.
Today, NBCUniversal is made of many parts that work together. It owns broadcast networks like NBC and Telemundo, which send shows and news over the air. It also runs cable channels such as Bravo and Universo, which show different kinds of programs like music, cooking, and sports.
The company makes movies through Universal Pictures and puts shows and films on the streaming service Peacock. It also operates theme parks called Universal Destinations & Experiences. NBCUniversal holds small investments in other media companies, too, so it can reach people in many ways—on TV, online, and at parks.
NBC and Universal started working together a long time ago. In the 1950s, a studio called Revue made shows for NBC, and over the years the businesses changed names and owners. In 2004, NBC and parts of Universal officially became one company called NBC Universal.
After that, the company’s ownership changed a few times. One big change came when Comcast took control in 2011 and later became the full owner. These steps helped the company grow from TV shows to movies and parks, joining many kinds of entertainment under one roof.
NBCUniversal has reached people in many countries by starting channels and networks outside the United States. In Europe it helped create channels like CNBC Europe and a station called NBC Europe, and it even joined in computer game events. The company also bought other channel groups to show its programs around the world.
It tried new technology and services, too. For example, NBCUniversal worked with tech groups so shows could play on more devices and made deals to put episodes in online stores. The company also started and renamed channels (like Sleuth, Cloo, and Chiller) to offer different kinds of TV and reach new audiences.
Peacock began as NBCUniversal’s plan to send TV shows and movies straight to people over the internet, a way called streaming. It started on July 15, 2020, so families could watch on phones, tablets, or TVs without needing a cable box. Peacock joined other services like Netflix and Disney+ and grew quickly—by 2025 it had millions of paying customers, showing how many people like watching this way.
Leaders shaped the new service, and NBCUniversal made moves with other businesses too. For example, a video store service called Vudu changed hands and later became part of Fandango, then was renamed Fandango at Home in 2024. These changes helped Peacock and the company offer more ways to watch.
A movie library is a big collection of films and cartoons that a company owns or can use. NBCUniversal has many famous libraries, including those from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation. It also has permission, or rights, to show some films made by other studios. That means they can put those movies on Peacock, on TV, or sell them in stores.
Not every old movie in a pile belongs to NBCUniversal—some belong to other companies or have special deals. Because of these libraries and rights, NBCUniversal can share classic films, make new shows from old stories, and sometimes trade or join with others to make even bigger collections for viewers.
