Mount Rushmore Facts For Kids

The idea for Mount Rushmore began in 1923 when sculptor Gutzon Borglum wanted to create a monument to honor America. 🎨Construction started in 1927 and took 14 years to finish! Borglum and his team used dynamite to shape the mountain rock, which was super exciting! The monument was finally completed in 1941. Interestingly, the location was chosen because of its stunning views and was dedicated to showing America's strong history to the world. 🏔️

The design and sculpting of Mount Rushmore were a huge job! Gutzon Borglum used a special tool called a pointing machine to measure and create accurate replicas of his models. 🛠️ Workers blasted away billions of pounds of rock using dynamite! The team also used drills and chisels for the finishing touches. The faces of the presidents were designed to show details like their noses, mouths, and eyes. Each face took about 14 years to create, so it was a labor of love! 💖

The four presidents on Mount Rushmore were chosen because they played important roles in American history. George Washington was the first president, who led the country to independence. 🎖️ Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and expanded the country through the Louisiana Purchase. Theodore Roosevelt helped build the Panama Canal and promoted conservation. 🌍Abraham Lincoln is known for ending slavery and preserving the Union during the Civil War. Together, they represent the spirit of the United States and its values: freedom, leadership, and hope! 🇺🇸
