Early Life

Katarina was born on January 9, 1993, in Liverpool, England. Her mom, Tracey, is English, and her dad, Ricardo, is from the Bahamas. As a baby, she lived in Nassau, Bahamas, for her first year. Then she moved back with her mom to a place near Liverpool called Halewood.

She went to St Mark's Catholic Primary School and later St Julie's Catholic High School in Woolton. There, she made a friend who grew up to be actress Jodie Comer! Katarina started college for sports science but left after just three weeks to focus on her athletics dreams.

Youth Career

As a young athlete, Katarina represented Great Britain with pride. In 2009, at just 16, she won gold in the heptathlon at the World Youth Championships in Brixen, Italy. That was a huge early victory!

The next year, 2010, she faced a setback with jumper's knee, which kept her out of most competitions. But she bounced back strong. In 2012, she broke a British junior record with 6,007 points at a meet in Italy. This exciting score got her close to qualifying for the Olympics.

Early Major Championships

Katarina stepped onto the world stage at the 2012 London Olympics for Great Britain. In the heptathlon, she finished 13th with 6,267 points. It was her first taste of the biggest games!

She kept improving. At the 2013 World Championships, she placed fifth. Then, in 2016 at the Rio Olympics, she earned sixth place. The next year, 2017, she was fifth again at the World Championships. Each race built her skills and confidence.

Indoor Pentathlon Wins

Katarina Johnson-Thompson shone brightly in the indoor pentathlon, a tough five-event challenge held inside big arenas during winter. This test includes the high jump, long jump, shot put, speed hurdle race, and an 800-meter run. She set a British record with over 5,000 points!

In 2018, she grabbed gold at the World Indoor Championships. She also won gold at the European Indoor Championships in 2015 and 2019. These victories made her a world champion and double European champion. Her skills in jumping, throwing, and running made her unbeatable indoors.

Moving to outdoor competitions, Katarina broke through in the heptathlon, a seven-event test over two days with hurdles, sprints, jumps, throws, and a long run. In 2018, she earned silver at the European Championships with a personal best of 6,759 points, just behind the winner.

In 2019, she smashed her own record at 6,813 points in Austria, ranking high on the world list. Her biggest win came at the World Championships in Doha, where she scored a stunning British record of 6,981 points for gold. These feats showed her growing strength and smart training.

Tokyo Olympics 2020

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Katarina aimed for Olympic glory in the heptathlon. She started strong but faced a tough setback during the 200-meter race.

Sadly, she fell and hurt her leg badly—a calf tear and Achilles tendon problem. This forced her to stop competing. Though it was disappointing, Katarina's courage and past successes inspired many fans worldwide.
