Introduction

EarthBound is a fun adventure video game from 1994. It came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, made by a team including Shigesato Itoi and Satoru Iwata. This game is part of the Mother series and takes place in a modern world full of quirky towns, strange caves, and hidden spots.

You play as a boy named Ness who wakes up to a bright light crashing into a meteor. He teams up with friends to collect magical melodies from special places called Sanctuaries. These melodies help stop a scary evil force. The game mixes everyday life—like going to school or fighting neighborhood bullies—with wild fantasy battles. It's famous for its funny moments, catchy music, and heartfelt story about friendship and courage.

EarthBound feels fresh because it shows a world like ours, but with aliens, psychics, and giant bugs!

How To Play

In EarthBound, you control a group of friends called a party as they explore a big, connected world. There are no loading screens between towns, caves, and dungeons—everything flows together smoothly. The view uses a special angle called oblique projection, making it look 3D but still flat on screen.

Enemies walk around visibly, not hiding for surprise attacks. If your character touches one, a battle starts! Sneak up from behind for a first hit, but watch out if they spot you first. In fights, choose actions like attacking with weapons, using PSI (psychic powers that cost PP points), spying on foes, copying moves, or running away.

Battles raise your experience points to level up, making characters stronger. HP drops when hurt—if it hits zero, you're out cold. Heal with items or PSI to wake up and keep going.

The Story

The adventure starts when Ness sees a meteor crash near his home in Onett. A scary alien named Giygas wants to cover the world in darkness and hate. Ness gets a Sound Stone to collect eight magical melodies from glowing Sanctuaries scattered around.

Ness rescues Paula from tricky cultists, fixes a zombie problem in Threed to meet Jeff, and finds Poo after his special training in Summers. Together, they visit a dreamy place called Magicant and use a time machine to face the final challenge.

In the end, Paula calls on people's love and prayers from around the world. Your friends' emotions help beat Giygas—not just fists, but heart power!

Heroes And Villains

Ness is the brave leader from Onett. He's a baseball-loving kid with strong PSI powers like PK Fire and healing. He guides the team to victory.

Paula is a smart girl with amazing psychic blasts and prayers. Jeff is a gadget whiz who fixes machines and shoots bottle rockets. Poo is a prince trained in mystic arts, zapping foes with ice and mirrors.

The big villain is Giygas, an evil alien swirling in hate who wants to destroy everything good. Sneaky Pokey, Ness's former neighbor, turns bad and helps Giygas, blocking your path at the end.

The Music

EarthBound's music mixes fun styles like jazz and sunny beach tunes, making the adventure feel lively and dreamy. Composers Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka returned from the first game, joined by new helpers. They created over 100 songs, but picked the best to fit the game's world. Suzuki's map-walking tunes play as you explore, including a bouncy bicycle song he made early on.

The Super Nintendo's sound tech let them use clearer notes and rhythms, like in real band music. Influences came from bands like the Beach Boys and singers like John Lennon, plus dances like salsa. This jazzy soundtrack fills the game with happy and spooky feelings that match the story perfectly.

Behind The Scenes

Making EarthBound took five long years, with creator Shigesato Itoi and helper Satoru Iwata leading the team in Japan. They built on ideas from the first Mother game but made it bigger and funnier.

For the U.S. version, called EarthBound, translators like Marcus Lindblom added American jokes and everyday touches. They changed some signs and symbols to fit Nintendo's rules, keeping everything kid-friendly. Lindblom worked mostly alone to polish the words, making dialogues witty and true to the quirky story.

Praise From Fans And Critics

Fans and game experts love EarthBound for its weird, wonderful world set in a 1990s America full of surprises. Critics call it one of the best Super Nintendo games, praising the smooth battles, jazzy music, and smart script that mixes laughs with deep feelings.

Reviewers highlight the unique story that breaks normal game rules, like saving at payphones or fighting with yo-yos. Magazines like IGN and Kotaku say it's super original, with dialogue that's bold and heartfelt. Many rank it high in 'must-play' lists, saying its charm never fades.

Sequels And Rereleases

Nintendo planned a sequel called Mother 3 for the Nintendo 64, but delays and tech problems stopped it. Years later, they reworked it for Game Boy Advance and released it in Japan in 2006. It sold well there, with a touching story, but never came to America.

EarthBound got new life through rereleases! You can play it on Wii, 3DS, Wii U, SNES Classic, and Nintendo Switch Online. Fans kept asking for it, so Nintendo brought back this classic for new kids to enjoy the adventure.
