Introduction

BYD Auto is the part of a big Chinese company that makes cars, buses, and trucks. It builds vehicles that use electricity, or a mix of electricity and petrol, to help use less fuel and make cleaner air. These kinds of vehicles are called new energy vehicles (NEVs).

BYD Auto sells cars under the BYD name and also under other brands for different buyers. Some are made for everyday families, while others are designed to be fancy or very strong, like electric buses for cities and trucks for work.

How Byd Auto Began (2003–2009)

BYD Auto started in 2003 after a company called BYD bought a small car factory in Xi’an and gave it a new name. This helped BYD learn how to make whole cars, not just batteries. Using its battery know-how, BYD soon began making its own models.

The first popular model was the BYD F3, which began production in 2005 and sold many thousands of cars. BYD also made early electric and hybrid models: the plug-in hybrid F3DM in 2008 and the battery-only e6 in 2009. Because more space was needed, the company built a new plant in the Xi’an development area.

Big Growth And Going Around The World (2020–now)

Starting around 2020, BYD grew very quickly. In 2020 it sold about 427,000 vehicles, and by 2024 that number rose to over 4.2 million — roughly ten times more. This jump happened because many people in China and other countries began choosing electric and plug-in cars.

Electric vehicles became much more popular in China in those years, and that helped BYD sell many more cars and buses. The company also spread to other countries, making and selling vehicles where cities want cleaner buses and more electric cars.

The Blade Battery — A Safer, Space-saving Battery

BYD introduced the Blade battery in 2020 with the BYD Han car. The Blade battery is a different shape from older batteries: it uses long, thin cells placed close together like blades. This design helps the battery stay strong, fit more safely into the car, and use space better.

Because of this battery and other work, BYD also became a large maker of electric buses around the world. BYD builds buses in several places, including a plant in Lancaster, California, and by 2022 it was the biggest builder of battery-electric buses in North America.

Making Cars In China

Xi'an is one of BYD’s biggest places for building cars. It was the first large base and now has big halls for putting cars together, making electric motors, and making batteries. BYD added a second plant in 2014 and kept growing; after a major update in 2022 the site can make many hundreds of thousands of vehicles each year and made over one million cars in 2024.

Other important Chinese factories are in Changsha and Hefei, and BYD has research centers in Shenzhen and Shanghai where engineers design new cars and batteries. In 2024 BYD also moved plans for a passenger-car factory to a new area near Shantou, Guangdong.

Factories In Other Countries

Los Angeles became BYD’s North American base in 2011, and not long after BYD opened a factory in Lancaster, California, to build electric buses. That bus plant helped cities try battery-powered buses instead of diesel buses.

BYD has also looked at building vehicles closer to buyers outside China. For example, the company has plans to make cars in Mexico so parts and vehicles can be made nearer to customers in the Americas.

Byd In The United States

Lancaster is where BYD started making electric buses for U.S. cities. The company first delivered buses to the Los Angeles Metro system in 2015, and other cities, like San Francisco, have also used BYD buses. Making buses helped BYD become well known in the U.S. transit world.

BYD’s work in America has focused more on buses and commercial vehicles than on selling passenger cars. In 2023 one of BYD’s American units became a separate company called RIDE Mobility to run bus work and services.

The Gac Byd Partnership

GAC BYD is a way for BYD to work together with another car maker so they can share ideas, factories, and tools. When two companies partner, they can build cars faster and try new designs without doing everything alone.

Around the world, BYD’s partnerships have helped it grow as a top maker of electric buses used by big transit systems. The company has said it will focus on buses and building plants nearby, like a planned factory in Mexico, rather than immediately selling many passenger cars in the United States.
